I am thrilled to be taking part in Multicultural Children's Book Day for the third year running! Multicultural Children's Book Day is a great initiative that aims to promote and celebrate diverse children's books as well as get more of these books into libraries and schools.
This year I was sent two brilliant books by two young authors. Jeremiah J. Barnes and James J. Barnes are eight year old twins from Indianapolis, Indiana. They both enjoy writing in their spare time and have produced some wonderful books. In fact, these books are so good it's hard to believe that two eight year olds wrote them. They are extremely talented boys!
My Family's Great Smoky Mountains Adventure
Jeremiah does a good job explaining the whole holiday from the journey to their cabin to the amazing places they explored during their stay. I enjoyed the references he made to his family's feelings, such as when he talked about his mother not being happy that they had left late or how a lot of adults in the car park looked mad because they didn't have any change to pay for parking. He then went on to tell us about his father taking some of his birthday money to buy a car parking ticket. This made me chuckle because I sometimes do
it too!
The book is packed full of wonderful photographs that really help the reader to visualise what the holiday was like. I like how there are notes under the photographs that explain a little about the context of the photo.
Overall, I think this is an enjoyable, well-written book. My seven year old said he loved the photographs and the writing!
Ghost Text
The story is engaging and gripping! I found myself getting hooked very early on and wanting to carry on reading to find out what happens. The storyline is very interesting and will definitely engage a young reader who is confident enough to read short chapter books.
The story is very well-written. The excellent use of language and the unique storyline make it interesting to read. My 9 year old is halfway through reading this and she is enjoying it very much.
My children and I thoroughly enjoyed these books by Jeremiah and James Barnes. They are two very talented individuals and I have no doubt they are destined for great things. I look forward to reading their future publications!
If you would like to get your hands on a copy of these books, you can purchase from this website. You can also purchase 'My Family's Great Smoky Mountain Adventure' from Amazon using the link below.
Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020 (1/31/20) is in its 7th year! This non-profit children’s
literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving
moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors
on the market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and
educators.
Seven years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’
books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues.
